The individual who fills this position demonstrates that he or she is capable of carrying out the following roles and responsibilities: 

  • Evaluate patients by interviewing the patient, family, and other persons; conduct psychiatric examinations; observe behaviors; review medical history and related documents; select, administer, and interpret psychological tests; order laboratory tests and evaluate results.
  • Develop treatment plans by determining nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders; establish treatment goals and methodologies.
  • Treat patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discuss progress toward goals with patients; provide instructions; monitor the effect of medications; supervise staff provision of services.
  • Maintain interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress; consult and collaborate with primary care physicians, mental health therapists, nurses, and other healthcare providers.
  • Assure quality and safe service for patients and staff by enforcing policies, procedures, standards, rules, CARF accreditation requirements, and legal regulations; participate in utilization reviews; remain available for emergency consultations.
  • Improve staff competence by providing training and discussions regarding the interrelationship between psychosocial and physiological problems, psychotropic medications, crisis intervention, and related issues.
  • Maintain historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events; write summaries.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Perform Psychiatric Evaluations utilizing contract agency forms and complete forms thoroughly and legibly (or is willing to dictate when necessary)
  • Through thorough discussion with the consumer of history and present concerns, provide a diagnosis (based on the DSM-5 criteria for mental illness or substance abuse disorders) of consumer symptomology and prescribe appropriate treatment relevant to this diagnosis and the needs of the consumer.
  • If necessary and part of the treatment plan, prescribe medications to consumers to assist in controlling symptoms and educate consumers on the effects of the medications, possible side effects, and desired results.
  • Have a working knowledge of prescription insurance coverage and when possible, prescribe medications covered by the consumer’s insurance plan.  If best possible medication treatment is not covered, refer to nurse for assistance with prescription coverage.
  • Complete medication reviews quarterly (in outpatient) or more often as needed to ensure the efficacy of prescribed medication and treatment plan.  Adjust medications when necessary. In crisis residential or ICI setting daily to weekly reviews may be necessary
  • Care Coordination with all involved parties - consult with case managers, therapists, other treatment providers, and family when appropriate to determine the best possible treatment plan.
  • Supervise/Collaborate with nurse practitioners and physician assistants under his or her orders and review/sign case files completed by nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants.
  • Maintain credentials and certifications as required by contract agency and State Medical Board.
  • Maintain relationships with pharmaceutical representatives to ensure current knowledge of new medications and to maintain an ongoing supply of sample medications.
  • Willing to participate in the Utilization Review Committee as needed.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Possess a doctorate degree in medicine from an accredited medical school with a specialization in psychiatry
  • Be a member in good standing of the State Medical Board
  • Working telephone
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Pass all regulatory checks
  • Must  have required state licensure including  Physicians License, Pharmacy -Controlled Substance License and DEA
  • Board certified (preferred)
